Duck!

There's some ducks that were hanging out on the Sammamish River right behind my apartment. They weren't afraid of all the people walking and biking past, so I ran back inside and grabbed my camera to go and join them. I was able to walk right in the middle of them all and get some excellent close-ups (without getting beaked in the lens, which is amazing.)

Check the photolog for a couple of the best shots. The look in that hen's eye just about knocked me over right through the lens!

First submissions

I just posted 4 new pix to the album:

The two pix of the flowers are from Krohn Conservatory, here in Cincinnati OH. It's one of my favourite places to go, not just for taking pictures, but just when I need to calm my mind (which has been a lot over the past year.) There's 3 different climate rooms that they have there and 2 specialty rooms dedicated to just one type of horticulture. The main (and largest) room is the tropical forest, which has giant pitcher plants, a banana tree, and a 3 story waterfall, just to mention a few things. There's a second tropical room dedicated to more of the flowering plants; a temperate room which is where they put on their seasonal displays (like the butterfly exhibit where the room is filled with butterflies just floating about in the open); and the desert room with all the cacti. My two favourites are the specialty rooms, though: The orchid room and the bonsai room. It was just this year that they moved the orchids from a small, windowed viewing chamber into a 20' x 30' high ceilinged room of their own that you can walk through. It's tough getting pix before your lenses steam over, but it's worth it.
The next two pix were taken at a campsite work weekend in Albany, IN. Four of us were camping, and I'm always up just as the sun brightens my tent, so I took advantage of the quiet time and went around the campsite getting some pix. The sun coming in through the high canopy early in the morning was one of the greatest things about the weekend, and everyone else there missed it by being asleep. The spooky glowing picture needs some explanation... There's a lot of standing deadwood that we were taking down to use for firewood at our upcoming festival out there. One tree was so rotted at the base that Poosie was able to push it over and fell it with her bare hands. She toppled it into the middle of the trail, and by the time we were done with work elsewhere, we were too tired to cut up and haul back any more trees, so we left it there. Later that night, she stubbed her foot on some mushrooms off in the scrub brush, and called us over to show us that they were glowing where they got nicked. She went wandering back down that trail with the felled tree, and called us over again because the stump and the base of the deadfall were both glowing with that eerie green haze. It turns out that the glow is caused by Honey Fungus (Armillaria mellea) which rings the trees and kills them with the mycelium which infests the root bed and the base of the tree, sapping all the nutrients from entering the trunk. The mycelium and rhyzomes of A. mellea happen to be one of the few bioluminescent fungi here in the midwest, and we were lucky enough to find a bunch of it. We found 4 more felled trees that were glowing.

Camera: Kodak DX7590 5.0MP w/ 10x optic zoom and EVF
"Bee on Flower" taken with automatic macro scene setting for close-ups. Auto flash, auto metered.
"Water on Orchid" taken with 'full auto' setting at distance of 20' using high zoom (optic range only)
"Sun Through Trees" taken on full manual setting. f5.6, 1/15, ISO200 equiv.
"Bioluminescent Deadfall" taken on full manual setting. f2.8, 16 sec, ISO400 equiv. (wish the cam had higher ISO equiv settings, but 400 is it.)

A Little Game...

I was playing with the macro on my camera today and thought of a little game. I posted a picture I took using the macro function and you guys have to figure out what it is. It’s posted under Macro Game 1. I’ll give you a couple hints. 1) To everyone’s relief, it is NOT a human or animal part. 2) There are only a very few people that would consider it disgusting. But, those people are in denial and actually crave it more than the rest of us!

High School Graduation Pics

I overheard my wife making an appointment with a photographer to have my daughter's high school graduation pictures taken. I said, "Whoa! Before we spend $ on a that, let me give it a go." My daughter was all for it and my wife reluctantly agreed, saying that if my photos were crappy, I wouldn't beef about having a pro do it. Now, I know that the pros are getting away from those aneseptic pics like the ones taken of me, so I knew I didn't need all that studio stuff. My daughter and I went to our local park, and here are some of the results.

Screamin' Maureen

Last weekend I went to the Spice Road show at the Mirabeu Room. One of the dancers did a gothic belly dance. She is a member of The Hands of Kali troupe that my friend Kendra leads, but she did a solo that night. The Kendra Pic

Anne said it is ok to post artsy farty stuff. I was a volunteer at charity event in December and one of my duties was to take pictures. James and Deepayan were there, and Deepayan's profile pic is one of the ones I took.

Anyhow, I got connected to a woman named Kendra and we became Tribe friends. When I was editing the photos of the charity event, I saw that Kendra had been one of the performers I'd photographed. So, I sent her the pics and we emailed about doing more that are a bit different from the norm. I used one of the pics I took of her in December and toyed with it today. I posted the result here. I'm very pleased with it, and so is she.

Okay, so you know by now that I really dig taking pictures.

I made this tribe so that we can all post the pictures that we take on our adventures that maybe have nothing to do with certain tribes, so we don't know exactly where to put them.

I made it moderated, but if you would prefer, it could be private. 'cause I know how y'all like gettin' naked and having your pictures taken.

Anyhoo, I just figured it'd be a good idea, that way they'll be in one place just ripe for the pickin'!
